Dial Indicators are well known as analogue gauges for the reason that the movement of their indicating hand is an analogue of the displacement of a plunger that contacts a workpiece through a hard contact point on its end. These instruments are most often used for short-travel applications such as checking circular runout making height comparisons between workpiece features and gauge blocks on a surface plate. Dial gauges intended for measurement of length comparable with the range of a micrometer are generally multi-revolution types with a continuously graduated dial with the numerals increasing clockwise. Some also have numerals anticlockwise for measuring in the reverse direction. A purely reverse-reading dial is for use on depth or bore gauges. Those gages intended for comparison measurement have a balanced dial with the numerals increasing in both directions from zero for reading small differences from a reference surface and may be limited to one revolution to aid error-free reading. The contact point on a standard dial indicator can be changed simply by unscrewing it from the plunger and screwing in the replacement.
