Hoffmann Group 51 INFORMATION ABOUT BREATHING PROTECTION Certain standards are applicable for various breathing protect products within the European Union. Each product must be tested and certified for compliance at an independent centre, in order to ensure the protection of the user. The statutory regulations in Germany for the use of breathing protection equipment are governed by DGUV 112-190. It indicates the concentration of a substance above which acute or chronic injurious effects on health are to be expected. The general dust limit value (AGSW) for dust particles is 1.25 mg/m3. As soon as this value is exceeded at a workplace, appropriate protective measures must be introduced. In principle of course: the fewer pollutants breathed into the lungs, the better. Particle concentrations are measured in mg/m3, gas concentrations are measured in ppm or mg/m3. The limit value of a particular substance in the air thus depends on the prevailing total burden and on the chemical composition. If there is no specific limit value, the AGSW is applicable. The various substances are hazardous to the organism to different degrees. The diagram above shows for instance that a small quantity of chlorine (2 mg/m3) causes lasting damage to the lungs, whereas an acetone concentration as great as 1,200 mg/m3 is still harmless.
